There is always more misery among the lower classes than there is humanity in the higher.

Victor Hugo
About This Quote

This quote is about class. It’s about how the lower classes are far more miserable than the upper, and how we should treat them differently. This idea is a little dated, but if you take it to heart, you should be able to see why it’s important. It’s not enough to simply say that everyone should get an equal chance at happiness.

Not everyone is born into the same class, and that matters. It’s about the way we should treat people and whether we should care about their well-being or not. The best example of this is slavery: there were people who treated other people horribly, but they did so out of ignorance and fear of death rather than malice.

The slave owners were fully aware of what was going on (and even helped perpetuate it) but did so anyway because they thought it was for their own benefit. The slaves knew what was going on too, but they did it out of necessity not malice. They treated one another like family because they needed each other to survive each day; they treated one another like human beings instead of things because that was what they were in the eyes of the slave owners.
